What Are General Nursing and Midwifery?
The GNM is a paramedical course of diploma where the students learn about community health nursing, child health nursing, health care management, midwifery, primary health nursing, and Community Health Care. A midwifery professional is called a midwife. The nurse midwife acts as a nurse and a midwife who is responsible to take care of a woman’s lifespan, pregnancy, prenatal period, postnatal period, malnutrition, and birth control. They act as primary healthcare providers.
The role of a GNM is to provide nursing care effectively, monitor the patient’s condition, access the client’s nursing needs, should apply nursing techniques in problem-solving, client needs communication, set operation theatres medical equipment, demonstrate nursing care, and treat patients.
Only female students are eligible to pursue the course of GNM. The GNM nursing course is specially designed for students to prepare as nursing practitioners. The age limit of the student should not exceed more than 35 years of age. The candidates should have patience, technical knowledge, and practical skills, and should be efficient in handling tough situations.
How to Get a Government Job After GNM?
Basic GNM, Post Basic GNM, and Distance GNM are the types of GNM nursing courses. The students having an intermediate qualification with a science background can apply for the B.Sc nursing course i.e Basic GNM. The graduation course duration is for three and a half years. The candidates can also plan for the vocational diploma course of Multi Purpose Health Worker (MPHW) along with the 10+2 education for two years which is Distance GNM. The post-basic GNM course duration lasts for 2 years. After the course completion, the students should undergo the training program in clinics and public health institutions to get the certificate that might be helpful for the employment process.
Community Health Centers, Indian Nursing Council, various State Nursing Councils, The Indian Red Cross Society, rural health centres, nursing homes, private hospitals, government dispensaries, Old age homes, ESIC, Indian Army hospitals, AIIMS, JIPMER, Tata Memorial Centres are some of the departments where the openings for GNM are available. The freshers will be paid less as they are new to the job role whereas the experienced applicants can be paid more as they gain more knowledge from previous experience. The Ph.D. degree holders can choose their careers in technical, research, and pharmaceutical labs. The qualified GNMs can build their career abroad also as the course is having great demand.
